On the set 'Weekly' reports... How... What... Where... How did the day go? Who got fired? Who walked off set? Are we going over budget? Has the money dried up? Are the producers trying to replace me with their girlfriend's best friend? All the politics of filmmaking, in the raw, week by week.

Casting for White Light's leads.

Edmund Dehn gets the chop.

700 actors first applied for the 4 main UK parts in WHITE LIGHT, after 4 intensive casting sessions; the first seeing more than 100 actor/actresses over 2 days; the last pushing the chosen few to their limits. Edmund Dehn has been chosen to play the lead 'Peter McMullen'; Nicola Westmoore to play the female lead 'Frances'; Nicola Wilding to play 'Paula McMullen' and Andy Armour to play the Peter's boss 'David'.

I've had been winding Edmund up, AKA Peter McMullen, about his imminent haircut for the last 4 weeks. I'm sure he thought I was serious about a 'Number 2'... In the end it was a lot less painfull, I think he even likes it now. Thanks to Jack Lott at Jack's Haircuts, The Basement, 25a Old Compton Street, London W1D 5JW Tel: 0207 734 2954

Edmund's Personal Trainer.

I get Edmunds face...

Edmund, AKA Peter McMullen, decided off his own back to get into shape for the part. Over the last six weeks his Personal Trainer, 'Soraya Emment' at Holmes Place Heath Club in Kensington, has been pushing him to the limits. Hehehehe...

Unfortunately Edmund, AKA Peter McMullen, hasn't got a full Driving License for the Mississippi... Out of everyone who is coming, I'm the closest match... So, as if I didn't have enough on my plate being Writer/Producer/Director and D.O.P., I'm also Edmunds Driving Double in the U.S.. Jenny Cochrane has made a mask of both of us, so in America, I not only have to set the shot up but I also have to do a bit of acting... Well driving... I joke with Edmund that I can now kill his character off and act the rest... :-)

Final rehearsals.

Technical run through.

For about 8 hours the main cast and I went through the script rounding off the dialogue and refining the characters... Actually, trying to make the characters in the film more like the people who are playing them... "One of the actors said after a very good delivery, "I didn't feel like I did anything." I think I said "You've got it, that's exactly what I want..."

On the Sunday we had a full technical run though for costume, camera and sound... It was just as well we did... Shooting in B/W, you have to be very carefull of the tonal range of the costumes... If you have one actor in white and another in black, the contrast is way too much... It sounds easy to remember but in reality it's easy to forget. Another problem we picked up was that the radio mics we hired had a major interference because of a break in the cable... Both were replaced the next day...

1st Shoot Day - SC. 44

2nd Shoot Day - Hughendon Manor

The first day's shoot was a good one, thanks to all at RMC, especially David Pegg and Wendy Trim, we had our problems though... In the morning the sun was out full, unfortunately from behind... great for rim lighting but causing too much contrast for the DVCAM format. After checking with the Met Centre we decided to wait for cloud cover... It came at about 3.00 pm... Then it was panic stations for the next 4 hours dodging the rain showers but it looked great... Mind you it was a bad day for sound, the plonker I am I hadn't noticed until the day that the location was just around the corner from the main helicopter landing pad in Fulham... and on Heathrow's flight path in the afternoon... Oh, the joys of shooting in London...

The second day, had its problems as well... for me, I couldn't find the symmetry in the main house that I always key onto in locations... I found 2 areas in the gardens that I finally managed to get to work in my head... It had been a 5.00 am start and we finally got out at 1.00 pm in time for the house to be opened for the public... Karin had orgainised a great picnic, which everyone really appreciated... Thank you Roslynn Lee at Hughendon Manor for putting up with us all...
