Pickup shots Part 1
Interior CU's

After finishing a rough edit of the first half, I felt that the audience still needed to get closer to two of the main characters, Peter McMullen and his girlfriend Frances. So on the 10/11 August I set up a 'pickup shot' weekend, one of two. All the shots were interior CU and BCU, so shooting it all in a small flat wasn't much of a problem, even though as you can see below we were a bit cramped for space...

I love this sort of shoot, and it was a good way to get my confidence back up to speed. Unfortunately, because of the space limitations, it wasn't possible to get my main crew down, so I shot it myself with Ed and Nicky. The CU's we shot were; the Euro Hotel Room - quite difficult to match because of the bed matress in front of the window, so I shot the CU from the side and put the wall with the door on as much out of focus as I could and placed a grey card on it so I could just make out the shape of the door; Euro Bar - Chris Darwin in Liverpool, my production manager and lead actor from 'Dark Summer', managed to get hold of 2 rolls of the same wall paper we used, thanks Chris... So I build a small 4 ft. Square wall and added a floating piece which formed a corner when I needed it (Here are a few photo from the original set in Liverpool); Ed's London Apartment - this was quite easy because the flat looks quite like it, very clean and uncluttered, until I got the equipment set up; and a reshoot of some dialogue from the first scene we shot, the Euro Hotel Rooftop - This one was probably the most difficult, both CU's I needed had the sky in, luckily the light grey walls, when lit properly, where the same shade as the sky was, another good reason to wait for the sun to go in and shoot overcast with fill.

We all had a really nice meal on Saturday night.

I'm probably being anal again, but I think it was worth getting right... My fault, I'm not a great coverage man... Well tell me we had the time, but when we shoot the last half I must schedule enough time to get all the CU's I need... Monday was a bit of a scramble, dropping the gear back and getting packed for my wedding in Canada... (You can read more about the 'pickups' on Back on the road... in 'my online diary'.)

Thank you Myra for putting up with my weird and at times fustrating ways. Thanks also to best friends Kimmo & Tania for the lights, Procam for the mics and both Vodafone Hire Solutions for the Motorola Satellite Phone and Hire4Lower for the leather case.
